There are many ways to catch a walleye. This article will focus on the tactics used that capitalize on the most common behaviors of walleye across many different types of water.
There are many different tactics to use for walleye such as Jigging, Trolling, casting, drifting, live bait rigging and even handlining. All of these tactics work well in different bodies of water and under different conditions.
First off, you need to know that your body of water has walleye and then you need to know where the walleye are at. Walleye are aggressive opportunistic feeders that generally feed at night or in low light conditions. They also tend to feed in schools and in pods with other walleye of the same size.
Walleye like structure, but are prone to roam and exhibit nomadic behavior often while in search of food. It is not uncommon to find walleye in the middle of a reservoir at the thermocline with no structure around, this would probably mean they are focussing on the baitfish of the moment. Try to always find out what the walleye are eating and then try to match your lure and presentation to the food they are chasing.
In the spring, if you find out where walleye spawn such as in rivers with good oxygen flow that have rocky bottoms and gravel or on reefs or on rock formations in 4-15 ft of water in lakes, you will find hungry walleye.
