How to Learn the Basics of Steelhead Fishing
Steelhead is a part of the Pacific Salmon family and one of the
most interesting AND one of the most demanding freshwater fish you can catch in
the United States. Steelhead do not come in large numbers, so all that matters
is catching a steelhead, not how many you’ve caught. The fishing of
steelhead is an art that requires patience and practice - otherwise it is
little more than spending a day by the river.
So, how can we get the
needed practice? How can we learn the basics of Steelhead fishing?
Fishing Friends
The most obvious choice is to have a
friend who is a steelhead angler. He or she will show you everything,
teach you all small things you have to know and call you ‘rookie’ a
few times. The only problem is that there may be nobody like that among your
friends and you will have to learn it yourself.
If you don’t have
a living teacher, the next best option is to look for fishing advice on the
Internet.
Most popular Steelhead Fishing websites
There are two good sites to get your help - www.steelheader.net and
www.steelheadsite.com . There are lots of tips and hints that you might find
useful, but even with them, you will still lack practical knowledge and you
will have to be prepared for difficult moments of embarrassment when you try to
translate the theory into practice.
Fishing magazines
If you don’t like or don’t trust the Internet, another option is to
find help in fishing magazines. Unfortunately, you’ll soon find out that
it’s much more difficult than getting information from anglers’
websites. Magazine articles are usually written for people with some experience
in their field, so most of the articles can be useless if you’re a
beginner.
If both Internet and fishing magazines have failed, there is
only one option left.
Going on a fishing trip
It might
sound stupid, but it isn’t. There is simply no better way to learn
steelhead fishing than from a living teacher. If you don’t know anyone
like that, you just have to meet them. Don’t worry about showing your lack
of knowledge and/or skills - most people who are pros go fishing alone or in
small groups - not as a part of fishing trips! You’ll be among beginners
who will be learning the basics of steelhead fishing. Just as you will.

COTTAGE RESERVATION POLICY A deposit per cottage is required when making a reservation with remainder payable upon arrival by cash, VISA or MasterCard. Holiday Seasons are prepaid 30 days in advance. If cancellation is received 60 days prior to arrival date, or if another reservation is taken to replace your entire cancellation, a full refund minus a service charge will be given. To avoid any misunderstanding, you will be charged for the number of nights reserved. Personal checks welcome for deposit only, Visa and MasterCard or Cash on arrival only accepted. During July and August all cottages are rented on a weekly basis only, Saturday to Saturday. Check - in 3 p.m. Check - out 9 a.m. A fee of $ 50 shall apply to any late check-outs. |
